The easiest way to save on Gas?

Tl;dr: Link your credit card(s) in the Shell Fuel Rewards app for an easy discount.

This was my first lazy points (or, in this case, cash back) hack; basically the inspiration for the site. It doesn’t get simpler or lazier than this. You sign up for Shell’s Fuel Rewards, you link your credit cards, and you get a discount when you buy gas. If you never fill up at Shell, no harm no foul. If you happen to end up there? Free money. If you want to be slightly less lazy, you can do the math and factor in the discount to decide whether to head over to Shell when comparison shopping.

Some notes:

  • You can also just sign up with your phone number and enter that at the pump. But that’s work. If you link your card then you will get the discount just by paying without any extra steps.

  • If you sign up for a new credit card you’ll probably want to add that as well so you don’t miss out on the discount. The app crashed for me when I tried to add a new card, but the website worked fine.

  • The base savings is 3¢/gallon (“Silver” status). You will save 5¢/gallon (via introductory “Gold” status) for the first 6 months. The first 3 months are complimentary. After that, you need to purchase at least 5 gallons at least 6 times in each 3-month period to receive the 5¢ discount for the following 3 month period.

  • You can earn AA miles instead, earning 2 miles per gallon. I definitely recommend taking the 5¢/gallon for the first 6 months. If you drop down to 3¢/gallon silver status, at that point it might make sense to switch to AA miles, although personally I’d tend to prefer the cash unless I was saving up AA miles for a particular reason.

  • You can earn extra cash back towards fuel purchases in a variety of ways as well if you are so inclined, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you spend a lot of money at Shell (and even then you’ll probably get more value with other shopping and dining portals, for example).
