Tl;dr: Check your Amex offers for 5x bonus points on gas.

Gas is annoyingly expensive, especially out here in California, so I’m always on the lookout for ways to eke out little savings. I generally use my IHG Premier card, which gets 5x IHG points per dollar on gas, and usually offers discount at various stations (currently, I get 2% back at Chevron stations). I also have my cards added to the Fuel Rewards app to save some money at Shell stations.

For the next few weeks, though, my Amex Gold is going to be my gas card, because its usually-lackluster 1x earning on gas is going to shoot up to 6x:

Your mileage may vary, because not every Amex cardmember will be target for every offer on every card. But 6 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent is among the highest rewards rates you’re likely to see on a credit card. To see if you’re eligible for this offer, log into the Amex app or website and check the “offers” tab. It may make your pain at the pump slightly less painful.
